苗族是一个能歌的民族。以歌记史，以歌传情，以歌会友，芦笙场上有芦笙歌，嫁娶有开亲歌，赞美英雄有英雄史诗赞歌，种植五谷有种植歌，丰收有庆丰收的歌。男女青年爱唱情歌，喝酒的要唱酒歌，老人们摆古传授古代知识时候就要唱古歌了。古歌是苗族一切歌里最古老最丰富歌词最多的。
古歌是苗族的史诗，古歌是苗族的百科全书。古歌讲述了苗族古老的哲学、世界观，先从开天辟地说起，说到万物生成，人类繁衍，古代英雄史诗和苗族迁徙史，还讲了苗族的律法、刺绣、医药等苗族文化起源。内容庞杂广大。古歌在过去是苗族社会的知识百科，也是苗族文化传承和创造的根源。
在过去，古歌主要靠口传心授。在全球化冲击的今天，年轻人外出务工，很多人没有机会再去学习古歌。可以说，一个懂古歌的老人去世就是一本活苗族古歌的毁灭。
互联网为大家提供了方便。就算他们依旧在为了生活而奔波各在一方，却相聚于网络。这个支系(称为HmongbRud)主要居住在贵阳、龙里、惠水境内，以贵阳市花溪区高坡苗族乡为最大聚居地。这里的年轻人虽然在各地工作生活，却因为传承古歌，紧紧团结到了一起。在老人们的支持和辅助下，搞起了网络古歌大赛。
活动总结：
在很多热心人士及热爱苗族文化的同胞的支持下，于7年7月28日在苗族（摩若）古歌历史传承群开展了歌唱比赛，此次大赛经过筛选，共有三十名来自于不同工作岗位，不同地域的歌手参加比赛。赛事过程氛围融洽和乐，井然有序，本次参赛的古歌都是极其富有历史价值的歌，比如《开天辟地》歌是苗族最古老的歌谣，是一部记载着先古传说中，天，地，极其人类万物的来源。又如《亲家歌》是有了人类后人与人之间发展关系促成联姻的历史来源记载…
这次活动虽然圆满的结束了，但还有不足之处比如准备时间仓促，条件的限制，设备有限造成有部分古歌漏录或不完全。但相信在广大爱好者和热爱苗族文化，支持苗族文化发展的有识之士的大力支持下，我们将继续努力下去，把我们苗族文化，历史，歌谣传承下去并发扬光大。
